Position Summary:

The Senior Custom Display Builder is a technical expert responsible for leading the fabrication of complex, custom, and high-visibility exhibit components. This position sets the standard for craftsmanship, fit, finish, and dependable execution while reviewing drawings for build risks, resolving fabrication challenges, supporting final quality control, and helping less-experienced team members improve through example and practical guidance. The role balances quality, efficiency, safety, and deadlines while supporting Captivate Exhibits’ 360 Degree Customer Satisfaction Guarantee.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the fabrication of complex, custom, or high-visibility exhibit and display components from construction drawings and shop prints
  • Review drawings, specifications, and material selections for build risks, constructability concerns, and opportunities to improve quality or efficiency
  • Cut, machine, assemble, laminate, and finish wood-based and mixed-material components to Captivate quality standards
  • Troubleshoot fabrication, fit, finish, and material challenges and recommend practical solutions
  • Integrate electrical components, lighting, metal trim, acrylics, and aluminum extrusion systems as required
  • Support exhibit presets, final quality checks, packing, and preparation for shipment
  • Develop or support complex crating, blocking, and protective-packing strategies for custom components
  • Repair, clean, modify, and prepare exhibit properties returning from shows for future use
  • Provide practical guidance to Display & Cabinet Makers and assistants while teaching through example
  • Coordinate with Shop Leadership, Project Managers, and other departments to resolve technical questions and protect project requirements
  • Accurately track labor, materials, progress, and fabrication concerns in job tracking systems
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and model consistent compliance with shop safety practices
  • Remain calm, accountable, and solutions-focused when priorities shift or deadlines are firm

Required Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Education

  • Advanced experience in custom fabrication, cabinetry, millwork, exhibit, scenic, or display construction
  • Advanced proficiency with woodworking and fabrication tools, including table saws, miter saws, routers, sanders, drill press, laminate tools, and related shop equipment
  • Ability to independently interpret and build from fabrication drawings
  • Strong experience working with plywood, MDF, laminates, dimensional lumber, acrylics, hardware, and aluminum extrusion systems
  • Demonstrated mastery of craftsmanship, fit, finish, and quality control
  • Ability to identify build risks, anticipate problems, and make sound technical decisions under pressure
  • Deep understanding of exhibit assembly, disassembly, shipping, reuse, and the fabrication needs of modular, hybrid, and reusable exhibit systems
  • Experience leading difficult builds or serving as a trusted technical resource on the shop floor
  • Ability to coach and support less-experienced team members through clear communication and leadership
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, personal accountability, and commitment to safety
  • Ability to track time and materials accurately and communicate project status or concerns promptly

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet physical job requirements
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs.

Preferred Skills and Education

  • Extensive exhibit, trade show, experiential, retail display, scenic fabrication, or custom millwork experience
  • Advanced familiarity with modular, hybrid, and reusable exhibit systems
  • Experience supporting complex exhibit presets, installations, or dismantles
  • Knowledge of custom crating, internal blocking, protective packing, and shipment planning
  • Experience integrating electrical, lighting, acrylic, metal, and specialty-finish elements
  • Forklift or material-handling experience or willingness to maintain required training
  • Proven ability to deliver critical work under firm deadlines while maintaining quality and professionalism
  • Growth-oriented attitude with pride in finished work and a willingness to share technical knowledge
