We’ve put our experience to work for you to create a comprehensive trade show glossary. For anyone new to trade shows or corporate events, exhibit-related terms can be confusing. Fortunately, it only takes a show or two before a novice learns the basics of trade show marketing. The terms listed below are commonly used in any trade show hall or corporate event.

ACRYLIC
The family of clear, color and translucent thermoplastic resins such as Plexiglass or Lucite.
ADVANCED WAREHOUSE
A location set by show management to receive freight before the start of a trade show. Exhibit booths and materials are stored at this location and then shipped to the trade show at the designated time.
ADVANCE ORDER/ RATES
An order for services sent to the service contractor prior to the installation date. Advance rates are any fees associated with advance orders.
AESTHETIC
The overall appearance of your exhibit
AIRWALL
Partition wall used to sub-divide meeting and/or exposition space.
AISLE
Area between booths for audience traffic movement
AISLE CARPET
Carpeting installed in trade show aisles.
AISLE SIGNS
Signs, usually suspended, identifying exposition aisles by number or letter.
AMBIENT LIGHT
Uncontrolled and unintentional illumination
ANIMATION
Movement of either light or mechanical action
ANVIL CASE
Reinforced molded plastic case, normally with foam cut-outs for transporting fragile materials.
ARCH
An exhibit display ceiling or entryway that spans two points.
AREA AGREEMENT
A union contract covering companies and unions that bargain on an area-wide basis.
ARM LIGHT/ CLAMP LIGHT
A light with an extended arm, which typically clamp on.
ASSEMBLY/ INSTALLATION/ SET UP
The process of erecting an exhibit from its components.
ATTENDEES
People who go to tradeshow events, fairs and expos to visit booths and gather information on or purchase products and services.
AUGMENTED REALITY
An enhanced image or environment as viewed on a screen or other display, produced by overlaying computer-generated images, sounds, or other data on a real-world environment.
A/V
Audio/visual equipment such as monitors, DVD players, projectors and computers used to demonstrate products and services to trade show attendees.

BANNER STANDS
Portable printed graphics with a base or pole stand to create an upright banner display. Banner Stands are available in various heights and widths. See also called Pull Up Banners and Retractable Banner Stands.
BONEYARD
An area used for storage of equipment and supplies (such as shipping cases) during a trade show or event. A boneyard may have its own dedicated space in the exhibit hall, or it may be located on an unused portion of the show floor.
BACK-LIGHT/ BACK-LIT
A light source that illuminates translucent material from behind.
BACKWALLS
Booth structures that make up the rear of the exhibit. Often 10×10 trade show booths.
BANNERS
Hanging signs or display graphics printed on fabric, vinyl, or other material for temporary use.
BASE
Steel floor support piece for upright post
BEMATRIX
An American manufacturer of custom modular booth systems using aluminum frames.
BILL OF LADING
(B/L or BOL): A document that establishes the terms between a shipper and a transportation company for the transport of goods between specified points for a specified charge.
BLANKET WRAP
Non-crated freight shipped via van line covered with protective blankets or padding.
BLEED
Area beyond usable section of blow-up or copy block that allows for trimming or wrapping when an image runs to one or more edges of a substrate or medium.
BLOW-UP
Photographic enlargement
BOOKING
An arrangement with a company for use of facilities, goods or services
BOOM LIGHT
A boom light is mounted to a length of metal rod with a clamp or mounting bracket on the other end. These are generally mounted on the top edge of a display wall to cast light down onto the display.
BOOTHS
Area made up of one or more standard units of exhibit space. Exhibiting companies erect trade show displays within the booth space. Also called Stands at European fairs and expositions. Common sizes are a 10×10 Booths, 10×20 Exhibits 10×30 Exhibits, 20×20 Exhibits or Island Displays.
BOOTH AREA / BOOTH SPACE
The amount of space assigned to an exhibitor on the trade show floor. Measured by square footage.
BOOTH NUMBER
A number assigned by show management to identify an exhibitor’s floor space. Also known as Stand Number at European fairs and expositions.
BOOTH SIZE
The dimensions of the floor space contracted by an exhibitor. Usually sold in 10′ x 10′ increments. A 10×10 trade show booth is often the smallest size, up to a 20×20 exhibit size and larger.
BRAND VISIBILITY
The extent to which your brand is clearly visible to as many people as possible.
BREAKDOWN
A smaller modular piece of a larger exhibit. For example, a custom modular display island often has a 10×20 exhibit or 10×10 display breakdown. This allows the exhibitor to use different pieces of an island display for different sized booth spaces.
BRIEFCASE TABLETOP DISPLAYS
Briefcase displays are small panel or pop-up table displays that breakdown into briefcase size packaging. Graphics are typically attached for easy transportation.
BROCHURE STAND
Small, lightweight, and portable displays made from metal or mesh with pockets to hold marketing collateral. Also called Literature Rack or Literature Holder.
BRUSHED FINISH
Finish primarily on aluminum or steel achieved by rubbing with wire brush or steel wool to achieve a matte quality.
BUILD UP
The process of assembling an exhibit display before the show starts. An international term for Installation. Also known as Booth Set-Up.
CAD
Computer-Aided Design. A software is used by architects, engineers, drafters, graphic artists/designers, and others to create precision drawings of technical illustrations.
CAM/ TWIST LOCK
A type of fastening mechanism that incorporates a tab that is turned to engage a catch or slot.
CANOPY/ FINGER CANOPY
Drapery, awning or other roof-like covering. Finger Canopies are long skinny beams that resemble fingers.
CARPET
Flooring that goes under trade show displays. Trade show flooring is available in many different colors and styles–such as interlocking tiles and rollable segments– and materials, including sustainable, recycled and recyclable substances. See also Trade Show Flooring.
CHARGING STATION
A counter or table from which a cable is connected to that guests can charge their electronics.
COLOR MATCHING
The process of replicating colors in trade show display graphics for consistency and accuracy. Often used to complement a company’s corporate branding.
COMMON CARRIER
A freight transportation company which consolidates properties of several exhibitors into one shipment bound for the same destination.
CONFERENCE
An educational program including guest speakers and informational sessions for event attendees. Usually coincides with a tradeshow event or expo with booth space for exhibitors. Also called a Congress in Europe.
CONFERENCE ROOMS
A component in large island displays in which to hold private meetings and presentations to trade show attendees.
CONVENTION
A gathering of professionals in a given industry that meet to attend educational conference sessions and visit vendor trade show display booths.
CONVENTION CENTER
A large facility with ample booth space for trade show displays.
CORNER BOOTHS
Booth spaces which are open on two sides at the intersection of two aisles on the trade show floor. Also known as Corner Stands or Open 2 Sides at European fairs and expositions. Sizes can vary from 10×10 tradeshow booths to 10×20 exhibits up to 20×20 exhibits and larger island displays.
CORPORATE EXHIBIT
An institutional exhibit telling the story of the company without intentionally marketing a specific product or service.
COUNTER
A working cabinet for display, demonstration, or registration.
CRATING LIST
An itemized list of the contents of a crate.
CRATES/ PALLETS/ SKIDS
A wooden frame or box used to support and/or contain heavy objects or groups of materials for easier handling. Usually used as a platform for objects moved by a forklift.
CUBIC CONTENT
Length x width x height. As it pertains to exhibition booths, cubic content is a unit of measurement allowing display materials and products to occupy 100 percent of the exhibit space purchased, regardless of sightlines, up to a height established by the exhibition’s rules. Also, a measurement used in determining shipping costs for van lines.
CUSTOM EXHIBITS
Displays are designed and built from scratch to meet the specific needs of an exhibitor. Custom exhibit designs begin with determining the exhibitor’s trade show objectives. In European terms, Custom Exhibits are known as Custom Stands or Freebuilds.
CUSTOM MODULAR DISPLAYS
Exhibits constructed with interchangeable components designed to be set up in various arrangements and sizes. A modular trade show display can be customized to fit the exhibitor’s needs. Common sizes are a 10×10 tradeshow booth to a 10×20 trade show booth up to a 20×20 exhibit and larger.
CUSTOM PORTABLE EXHIBITS
Lightweight displays are designed to be compact and pack into small shipping cases that can be transported by one person or shipped via FedEx or UPS. Portable exhibits can be customized to fit the exhibitor’s needs. Sizes run from a 10×10 booth, to 10×20 exhibit up to a 20×20 exhibit and larger island displays.

CWT
Hundredweight or centum weight. A measurement used for shipping exhibit properties. In the US, this is equal to 100 pounds.

D.T. LABOR
Double Time Labor. Work performed on overtime and charged at twice the published rate.
DAMAGE REPORT
A report submitted by an exhibitor to a freight company or drayage contractor itemizing damage to shipped goods.
DARK DAY
A day on which a facility or hall has no events booked.
DEAD TIME
Time when a worker is unable to perform duties due to factors beyond his or her control.
DECORATOR
Decorators install pipe and drape booth dividers, booth signage, or overhead.
DEMO/ WORKSTATIONS
An area where sales personnel illustrate, demonstrate, or explain products.
DIM WEIGHT
Also known as volumetric weight. A pricing technique for calculating commercial freight transport which uses an estimated weight that is calculated from the length, width and height of a package.
DIRECT-PRINT GRAPHICS
Graphics that are printed onto a rigid or flexible/roll-able material using a flatbed UV printer. Ink is sprayed directly onto the material, then cured with ultraviolet light. Direct-print graphics are very cost-effective, durable, and fade-resistant.
DIRECT-TO-SHOW SHIPPING
A process where exhibitors’ items are shipped directly to the show site for a pre-scheduled delivery. Direct-to-show shipping is much riskier (and expensive) than advanced warehousing, since items must be delivered on a specific date, within a very specific time frame.

DIRECTORY
A catalog of basic information about the show, including exhibitors, floor plan and schedule of events (also referred to as an on-site program or program)
DISMANTLE
The process of taking apart a trade show booth and packing it into shipping cases for transportation. Also known as Tear-Down.
DISPLAY COUNTERS
A small component of trade show booths with surface area on top to display products and literature or perform computer demonstrations. Display counters often feature a locking door and internal shelves to store materials. Some models include USB ports for charging external devices.
DISPLAY KIOSKS
Small structures within a trade show exhibit, which often features a computer workstation(s) with multimedia capabilities. Also called Workstations at European fairs and expositions.
DISPLAY RULES & REGULATIONS
Exhibit construction specifications endorsed by major exhibit industry associations; also, the specific set of rules that apply to an exposition.
DISPLAY SPACE
Another term for booth space or the area of the show floor an exhibitor occupies to build an exhibit display.
DISPLAY STANDS
An international term for trade show booths.
DOCK
A platform where freight is loaded onto and removed from vehicles or vessels.
DOGHOUSE
An electrical distribution box that houses multiple outlets in one location.
DOUBLE DECK EXHIBITS
Multi-level trade show exhibits with two stories. Models can include 1 or 2 staircases.
DPI
“Dots per inch” referring to the resolution or sharpness of printed trade show booth graphics.

DRAYAGE
Also known as material handling, drayage is a term used to describe services performed by a contractor (usually hired by the event’s sponsor) and involves several steps: 1) transportation of your exhibit materials from the receiving dock to your assigned booth space, 2) removal and storage of shipping crates/cases once display setup is complete, 3) return of shipping crates at the conclusion of the event, and 4) loading materials back onto a carrier’s vehicle for outbound shipment.
DYE-SUBLIMATED GRAPHICS
Graphics that are printed onto fabric using a combination of a grand format printer and a heat press. Graphics are printed, then transferred to fabric while running through a 400°F heat press. Since the heat press is so hot, the liquid ink becomes a gas, and it’s sublimated into the fabric. Dye-sublimated graphics are very crisp and vibrant.

EAC
Exhibitor Appointed Contractor. A third-party contractor performing services like installation, dismantling, booth design, etc.
ECOSYSTEMS
An American manufacturer of sustainable exhibits and environmentally friendly custom modular trade show display systems and custom portable exhibits. See also Green Displays.
ELECTRICAL LAYOUT
A diagram used to designate placement of electrical outlets in the booth space of a trade show exhibit.
ELEVATION
Scaled drawings depicting front and side views of an exhibit.
END CAP
An exhibit space with aisles on three sides.
EPS File
A file type for 2D vector trade show booth graphics. EPS files are supported by several drawing programs and graphic editing applications. Vectored files are able to be enlarged without loss of resolution, which is ideal for large-format trade show display graphics.
EUROFRAME DISPLAYS
Custom modular tradeshow displays using aluminum frame components.
EVENT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
An organization tool, often web-based, in which trade show managers can keep track of exhibit booth inventory, schedule trade show shipping, organize trade show calendars, save important booth documents and manage budgets.
EVENT MARKETING
Face-to-face promotional experiences between customers and companies. Event Marketing includes a tradeshow event or outdoor events and often involves an exhibit booth.
EXHIBIT BOOTHS
One of many terms for trade show displays.
EXHIBIT DESIGN CONCEPT
A preliminary idea for a trade show exhibit often involves a hand sketch of the display. A custom exhibit design is based upon the exhibitor’s trade show objectives. Exhibit design is often related to a custom display but is also applicable to modular display and portable exhibits.
EXHIBIT DESIGNER/ PRODUCER
A company responsible for designing and constructing exhibit booths.
EXHIBIT DIRECTORY
A guide for exhibition attendees which lists exhibitors and exhibit booths.
EXHIBIT HALL
The area(s) within the exposition center where exhibits are located.
EXHIBIT HOUSE
A company which specializes in the design and production of trade show displays and booth graphics for exhibitors. An exhibit house often offers associated logistic services such as shipping, labor and storage for trade show exhibits.
EXHIBIT MANAGER
A person in charge of a company’s exhibit program.
EXHIBIT SPACE
An area made up of one or more standard units of booth space. Exhibiting companies erect trade show displays within the exhibit space.
EXHIBIT STANDS
An international term for trade show exhibits.

EXHIBITION
Also known as a tradeshow event or expo. Also called an Exposition in Europe.
EXHIBITOR
A company who contracts with show management for booth space at a trade show, in order to interact with attendees to sell products and services.
EXHIBITOR KIT/ SERVICE KIT
A packet of show-related information and order forms provided to exhibitors by show management.
EXPO
Also known as exhibition or trade show.
EXPOSITION
Also known as exhibition or trade show. Expo is the short form.
EXTERNAL FRAMES
External frames encase components in metal or plastic, emphasizing each individual panel. They are useful for displaying multiple pictures or segmenting your product offerings.
EXTRUSION SYSTEM
A trade show exhibit system constructed with aluminum posts as the main structure. Extrusion systems are often infilled with large-format, fabric trade show display graphics.

FABRIC DISPLAYS
Exhibit booths comprised mainly of stretch or tension fabric and a lightweight aluminum structure. Can be printed with large-format exhibit graphics.
FABRIC DISPLAY GRAPHICS
Trade show graphics printed on stretch or tension fabric. Can be translucent or opaque. Green or eco-friendly display graphics use water-based inks and fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. Fabric graphics also pair well with a truss trade show display or hanging tradeshow signs.
FACE-TO-FACE MARKETING
Another term for Event Marketing or promotional experiences in which customers interact directly with representatives of companies. Includes a tradeshow event or outdoor events.

FAIR
An international term for trade show or expo.
FAIR STAND
European term for an area made up of one or more standard units of exhibit space. Exhibiting companies erect trade show displays within the fair stand space.
FEET
Feet are any support that is designed to add stability or leveling to a display. These can be built-in or mount-on features.
FIBER OPTICS
The use of cut-glass fibers to display colored light.
FLAME-RETARDANT
A term used to describe materials that have been coated or infused with a fire-resistant compound. Note: These materials are not fire-proof!
FLAT PACK ROADCASE
A lightweight case used for portable displays and components approximately 24” x 48” x 8” with wheels, straps and handles for easy transport.
FLEXIBLE GRAPHICS
Flexible graphics are graphics that are printed on or laminated to flexible plastic material and rolled up for packing. Lexan, Styrene and polyester are the most common materials. There are numerous options for creating these graphics that vary in quality, durability, and price.
FLOOR MANAGER
An individual representing show management who is responsible for the exhibition area.
FLOOR PLAN
A map showing layout of exhibit spaces, lounges, concession areas, restrooms, electrical/plumbing, etc.
FLOOR PORT
A utility box recessed in the floor containing electrical, telephone, or plumbing connections.
FLUSH-MOUNT
Mounting of one material to another with no space in between them
FOAM CORE
Rigid foam covered with heavy paper stock used for mounting signs, art, etc.
FOLDING DISPLAYS
Portable displays, usually a tabletop trade show booth, that fold for packing in carry bags.

FORCED FREIGHT
When a bill of lading or material handling agreement listing exhibit properties to be picked up by a carrier, designated by the exhibitor, is not turned into the trade show contractor service desk, or if the designated carrier does not check in with the service desk by a specified time, or doesn’t show up the freight, the show contractor will either take the freight to their warehouse or ship it back to the exhibitor via its own preferred carrier at a non-discounted price.
FORCE OUT
The designated time in which all trade show exhibit properties must be removed from the exhibit hall.
FOUL BILL OF LADING
A carrier-issued receipt indicating that transported merchandise was damaged when received.
FOUR HOUR CALL
Minimum work period for which union labor must be paid.
FREEBUILD
A European term for Custom Displays, Custom Stands or Custom Build Stands.
FREIGHT DESK
An area in the exhibit facility (usually near the freight doors or loading docks) where inbound and outbound exhibit materials are handled.
FREIGHT
Exhibit properties and other materials shipped to a trade show for an exhibit booth.
FREIGHT CARRIER
A transportation company that performs shipping for trade show displays.

GANG BOX
Nickname for an equipment box most contractors and some exhibitors carry that contains tools and supplies needed for the routine set up of trade show displays.
GENERAL CONTRACTOR
Show management appointed company responsible for providing such services to exhibitors as drayage, exhibit furnishings, decorations, signage, utilities and labor for specific trade show or event. providing services to a trade show and/or its exhibitors.
GOBO
A pre-cut or etched pattern (usually made from metal or glass) that’s designed to be fitted into a lighting instrument. Once the light fixture is turned on, the projected light takes on the form of that pre-cut pattern (for example, a company logo).
GRAPHICS
Communicative and visual representations or illustrations – color, copy, art, photographs, translates, etc. – used to illustrate a booth theme or relay brand messaging.
GRAPHIC HEADER
A prominent component of trade show booths which features the exhibitor’s logo and company name.
GRAPHIC PRODUCTION
The process of printing large-format display graphics for trade show exhibits.
GREEN DISPLAYS
Trade show exhibits that are constructed with eco-friendly, recycled and/or recyclable materials. Green Displays are becoming more popular as businesses look for ways to fulfill green initiatives.
GREEN TRADE SHOWS
A tradeshow event or meetings which adhere to standards to reduce waste and energy usage and recycle show materials in order to lower their carbon footprints and reduce damage to the environment.

HANGING SIGNS
Overhead structures often constructed from lightweight aluminum tubing and fabric exhibit graphics printed with marketing messages. Hanging trade show displays come in many shapes and sizes.
HARDWALL
A type of exhibit construction in which walls are made of a solid material, rather than fabric.
HEADER
A graphic banner placed above the display that announces your marketing message or company name.
HEIGHT RESTRICTION
Refers to the maximum allowed height for a trade show display inside of a booth space. For instance, most 10′ x 10′ displays can’t be any taller than 8 feet. We strongly recommend reading your show manual before purchasing your display to ensure that you’re within the height restriction.
HYBRID EXHIBITS
Hybrid exhibits are more of a concept than a defined display system. The typical hybrid consists of aluminum extrusion, tension fabric graphics, and custom or modular components. Each manufacturer defines hybrid exhibits slightly differently and many refer to them as custom hybrid or modular hybrid displays. Hybrid exhibits are the fastest growing segment in the trade show exhibit industry.

I&D
I&D refers to the installation and dismantle of trade show exhibits. Also known as set-up and tear-down.
INFRINGEMENT
An exhibitor’s unauthorized use of floor space outside the leased booth area” (as defined by EXHIBITOR Magazine). Basically, this means that any of your company’s booth representatives, including product demonstrators, must remain within the boundaries of your company’s exhibit space during the show. If any of your booth representatives block the aisles or restrict access to other exhibitors’ booths, you could be penalized by show management.
INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR
A contractor hired by an exhibitor to perform trade show services independently of show management appointed contractors.
IN/OUT PREP
The process of preparing outbound and inbound freight shipments for trade show exhibit properties.
INLINE BOOTHS
Exhibits constructed in a continuous line along an aisle. Also called Linear Displays or Linear Stands, in European terms.
INSTALLATION
The process of setting up exhibits according to specifications. Also called Assembly or Set-up. In Europe, Installation is known as Build Up.
INSTALLATION & DISMANTLE
(I&D) is the term given to the labor required to set up, take down, and repack an exhibit. I&D rules and rates vary depending on the show hall and show management.

INTERLOCKING FLOOR TILES
Small segments of trade show flooring that fit together like a puzzle to create a larger floor.
INTERACTIVE KIOSK
A computer station, usually with a touch screen interface, that allows guests to interact with technology.
INVENTORY
Total amount of equipment available for a show
ISLAND DISPLAYS
Trade show booth displays with aisles on four sides. A common size is 20×20 island displays. Island Booths are called Island Sites at European fairs and expositions.

JIGGING
Protection located inside of exhibit shipping crates; specifically, the padding and sectional dividers that protect your display from damage during transit.
JIGGED CRATE
A special-purpose crate with hardware to secure exhibit properties in place to prevent shifting during shipment.
JOB FOREMAN
A person in charge of supervising and coordinating workers.

KIOSK
A small freestanding structure, open to one or more sides, used within an exhibit for the display of printed or electronic information.

LABOR
Contracted workers who perform show services.
LABOR DESK
Exhibit hall location where exhibitors may place orders for labor or check-in when ready to secure labor to begin the setup or dismantle of their booth.
LABOR FORM
The form used by exhibitors to order labor.
LAMINATE
Hard, flat or flexible material that is scratch and fade-resistant; used in trade show booths for a structural appearance.
LAMINATION
The process of bonding two or more substances together. Trade show booth graphics are usually laminated with a clear, plastic coating to protect the printed paper.
LARGE-FORMAT DISPLAY GRAPHICS
Requires expertise in design and production of big-scale trade show exhibit graphics.
LAS VEGAS APPROVED
A term used to refer to light fixtures which meet regulations imposed by the Las Vegas Convention Center and Visitors Authority (also known as the LVCVA). Read more on the LVCVA’s guidelines here.
LEAD MAN
Teamster or electrician supervising a crew.
LECTERN
A reading stand with a slanted top; a lectern that stands on the floor is a podium.
LED
Light-emitting diode; an energy-saving directional light source that emits its light in a specific direction; available in a wide range of colors.
LED Display Walls
LED’s are light emitting diodes versus the traditional LCD screens on TV’s, which use fluorescent lights. Unlike LCD screens, the manufacturing process for LED screen displays uses no mercury, which is an environmental pollutant. The software-based video wall technology of LED wall display rentals is comprised of many LED displays that work together as a unit-as if it were a single screen.
LIGHTBOX
An enclosed frame which houses lights underneath a translucent display graphic. Provides a back-light effect.
LINEAR DISPLAYS
Exhibits constructed in a continuous line along an aisle. Also called Inline Booths or Linear Stands.
LINE DRAWING
A black and white engineered drawing of a trade show exhibit.
LITERATURE HOLDERS
Small, portable, and lightweight displays made from metal or mesh with pockets to hold marketing collateral. Also called Literature Rack or Brochure Stand.
LOADING DOCK
An area within an exposition facility where freight is received and shipped.
LOGISTICS
The planning, implementation, and coordination of the details of exhibiting at a trade show. Usually refers to trade show shipping, booth set-up and take-down and exhibit booth storage.
LOGO INLAYS
Custom designed letters or images inserted or applied to the surface of trade show flooring.

MARSHALING
Marshaling refers to the sequential, organized staging of freight carriers waiting at the show freight yard for freight to be unloaded or loaded.
MARSHALLING YARD
A lot where trucks gather for an orderly departure to show site.
MASKING DRAPE
A cloth, tarp or fabric used to cover storage or other unsightly areas.
MATERIAL HANDLING
Services that include delivery of exhibit materials, removal of empty crates, returning crates and delivering materials back to the dock (also known as drayage)
MHA
Material Handling Agreement. An agreement which lists items being shipped as well as the exhibitor’s designated carrier.
MODULAR DISPLAYS
Exhibits constructed with interchangeable components designed to set up in various arrangements and sizes. In Europe, trade show modular booths are called Modular Stands. Available in many sizes from 10 x 10 booths to 10×20 exhibits, 10×30 displays up to 20×20 exhibits and larger island displays.
MONITOR MOUNT
A metal bracket is used to hang a computer monitor or TV screen on a trade show booth panel.
MOVE-IN/ TARGET DATE
The days or date specified by show management for beginning exhibit installation. Exhibitors may be assigned target dates and times for delivery of their freight to show site depending on the location of their booth in the exhibit hall; freight arriving before or after the specified date and time may be charged a penalty for being off target.
MOVE-OUT/ TARGET DATE
The days or date specified by show management for dismantling exhibits. Exhibitors may be assigned target dates and times for moving their freight out of the venue depending on the location of their booth in the exhibit hall; freight that isn’t ready for pickup, or if designate carrier fails to show, may be charged a penalty for being off target.
MULTI-LEVEL DISPLAYS
Also called Double Deck Exhibits or two-story exhibits.
MULTIMEDIA
Combining two or more types of audio/visual support in a presentation.
MULTIMEDIA TABLE
Touchscreen or interactive table that allows for electronic demonstration or collaboration.

NON-TRADESHOW EVENT
Meetings, conferences, seminars, and other promotional events which do not include a trade show or expo with exhibit booth space. See also Outdoor Events.

OPEN 2 SIDES
A European term for a Corner Booth.
OPEN 3 SIDES
A European term for a Peninsula Booth.
OUTDOOR EVENTS
Special events which occur outdoors. Outdoor events include sporting events, races and other special events. These outdoor events require special outdoor graphics that withstand the weather.
OUTDOOR GRAPHICS
Large format banner display graphics printed on durable paper, fabric or other weather-resistant materials with special inks that withstand the elements.
OVERTIME
Work performed by I&D labor after business hours, on weekends or holidays to set up and take down trade show exhibit booths. Premium service rates apply.
ON-SITE
A reference to the exhibit location (Exhibitor Media Group, 2019)

PACKING LIST
A document prepared by a shipper itemizing contents of shipment and including other information needed by the carrier.
PANEL
Panels describe an exhibit component that is flat, curved, short or tall. It can be a window, door, shelving, light box, or video panel. (Classic Exhibits, 2019)
PANEL SYSTEMS
A prefabricated trade show exhibit composed of connected rectangular panels of various sizes. See Lite Displays.
PEDESTAL
A small trade show display counter used to display products.

PEG BOARD
The trade name for a type of hardboard with perforations at regular intervals. Usually used for hanging items.
PENINSULA DISPLAY
Similar to an island display, but with aisles on 3 sides.
PERIMETER BOOTH
A linear booth that backs to a wall of the exhibit facility rather than another exhibit.
PHOTOMURAL GRAPHICS
Large-format display graphics panels of standard sizes installed side-by-side to make a larger image. Often used with Popup Trade Show Displays.
PILLOWCASE
Describes a fabric graphic that’s sewn to look like a pillowcase. This type of graphic is designed to slip easily over a free-standing structure. A zipper is normally installed along the bottom edge of the graphic to keep it taut and ensure that it remains on the frame.
PIPE AND DRAPE
Pre-show marketing – advertising directed at show attendees prior to the start of a marketing event. Pre-show marketing can include e-mail blasts, mailers, printed materials, and promotional products (t-shirts, mugs, etc.).
PMS COLORS
The Pantone Matching System (PMS) is used to create consistent colors across various printed marketing materials, such as brochures, flyers, business cards and trade show display graphics.
PODIUM
Demonstration area, usually higher than the surrounding floor.
PONY WALL/ RETURN WALL
Short side panels joined perpendicular to the backwall.
POP-UP/ PORTABLE EXHIBIT
Pop-up – a type of display frame that’s engineered to literally “pop up.” The design allows for easy assembly, and pop-ups pack down smaller than large, custom booths. Newer pop-ups’ designs even allow for fabric graphics to remain on the frame during transit and storage periods.

POP-UP DISPLAY ACCESSORIES
Add-ons to pop up trade show booths which provide extra functionality. Common pop-up trade show booth accessories are shelves, monitor mounts, graphic headers, lightboxes and display counters.
PORTABLE EXHIBITS
Lightweight displays designed to be compact and pack into small shipping cases that can be transported by one person or shipped via FedEx or UPS.
PORTER SERVICE
A service that includes the emptying of wastebaskets in a booth at specific intervals during the show.
PREFAB
A pre-built booth that is ready for installation.
PROFILE HEADERS
A trade show display graphic header which extends above the top of the exhibit booth.
PROMOTIONAL DISPLAYS
“Point of purchase” or POP display racks used in retail environments to sell products for immediate purchase. Also called Trade Show & Retail Kiosks or POP Display Racks.
PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS
Collateral or branded giveaways used to promote a brand.
PROOF
Any preliminary reproduction provided by processor for approval prior to the finished product.
PRO-NUMBER
A carrier-assigned number used to designate a specific shipment.
PULL-UP BANNERS
A printed graphic which unwinds from a base unit and hooks onto a pole to create a standing banner display. Pull Up Banners are available in various heights and widths. Also called Retractable Banner Stands or Large Format Banner Stands.

QUALIFYING
A process used to determine whether an individual has the authority and/or financial capability to buy a product or service that your company offers.

RACEWAY
Metal or insulated rubber tubing used to channel electrical wires.
RAIL
A low wall used to divide exhibits.
RAISED LETTERS
Lettering cut out of any material and applied or mounted to a surface or background for a dimensional effect.
RASTER ART
Artwork that’s comprised of pixels, rather than vectored shapes and lines. Unlike vectored art, if raster art is scaled up too much during printing, it will become pixelated or blurry.
REAR ILLUMINATION
A technique of using a light source to light up translucent display graphics from behind. Also called Back-lighting.
RECEPTION COUNTER
Desk structure used at trade shows to greet event attendees, introduce the company and control traffic flow.
RECESSED LIGHTS
Light fixture that is installed in a hole in the ceiling, illuminating items below.
REFURBISH
The process of repairing or reconditioning an exhibit to extend its life span.
REGISTRATION
The process of obtaining information from an event’s participants, including name, company affiliation and address, plus any other information that is requested by show management.
RENDERING
A color, two-dimensional drawing of an exhibit booth during the exhibit design process.

RENTAL INVENTORY
Trade show exhibits owned by an exhibit house and rented out to exhibitors for event marketing and use at tradeshow events.
RENTAL BOOTH
A complete booth package offered to exhibitors on a rental basis.
RESOLUTION
The degree of sharpness of a computer-generated image as measured by the number of dots per inch (DPI) in trade show booth graphics.
RETAIL DISPLAY KIOSKS
A promotional display structure used in retail stores and shops to sell products for purchase. Also called POP Display Racks and Promotional Display. See also Display Kiosk.
RETRACTABLE BANNER STAND
A banner stand with graphics that retract into its base unit, allowing for easy storage and shipping.
RETURN
Side panels or walls joined perpendicular to the back wall.
RIGGER
A skilled worker responsible for attaching signs, banners, truss and other equipment to ceiling of exhibit venue.
RIGHT TO WORK STATE
A state where no person can be denied the right to work because of membership or non-membership in a labor union.
RISER
A platform for people or materials.
ROI
Return-on-investment; measurement of benefit an exhibiting company receives from participation in an exhibition; defined by a monetary value.

SEAFOOD DISPLAY

SECOND STORY
Also called Double Deck Exhibits or multi-level exhibits.
SELF-CONTAINED EXHIBIT
A display which uses the shipping case as an integral part of the exhibit.
SEMINAR
An educational program often associated with a tradeshow event and conferences.
SERVICE DESK
The location at which exhibitors order services from show management.
SERVICE KIT
A packet of show-related information and order forms provided to exhibitors by show management. Also called Exhibitor Kit.
SET-UP
The process of erecting an exhibit from its components; also called assembly, installation.
SET-UP DRAWING
Drawings which give detailed instructions for the installation of an exhibit.
SHIPPING CASE
A reusable container for transporting exhibit materials.
SHIPPING CRATE
A wooden container for transporting exhibit materials, which may be designed for a single use or custom built for extended reuse.
SHOW BREAK
Time specified for the closing of an exhibition and beginning of dismantling.
SHOWCASE
Glazed or framed enclosure for display of objects.
SHOW DECORATOR
A company, contracted by show management, which is responsible for the labor, drayage, installation, decoration and dismantling of exhibits at the show.
SHOW FLOOR
The area(s) within a convention center where exhibits are located. Also called Exhibit Hall.
SHOW MANAGER
The organizer and operator of an exposition.
SHOW MANUAL
Information that’s provided to exhibitors by show management regarding policies, procedures, and deadlines for a particular event. It’s very important to familiarize yourself with its contents before going to your show!
SHOW OFFICE
The show management office at an exposition.
SHRINK WRAP
Process of wrapping loose items on pallet with transparent plastic wrapping.
SIDE RAIL
A low divider wall, usually made out pipe and drape, used to divide one exhibit space from another.
SINTRA
PVC panel, same as Chydex, Chomatex, used in signs and displays.
SKETCH
A hand-drawn concept for a trade show display at the beginning of the exhibit booth design process.
SPACE RATE
The cost per square foot of an exhibit area.
SPECIAL HANDLING
Applies to exhibits shipments requiring extra labor, equipment, or time for delivery to exhibit space.
SPOTLIGHT
A lamp that provides a defined circle of light.
STAGING
The act of erecting a booth for the purpose of previewing it prior to shipping to the event.
STANDS
European term for trade show booths.

STAND NUMBER
Also called Booth Number.
STAND-OFF GRAPHICS
Trade show display graphics which are raised off the display wall surface by several inches to add dimension.
STEP AND REPEAT
A branded backdrop with a logo or image repeated in multiple places.
STEWARD
The Steward is the title given to the lead position of the union labor manager. This is the show floor boss who manages the labor and ensures that exhibitors follow show regulations.
STORAGE
Keeping exhibit properties in a warehouse facility until needed. Exhibit houses provide storage for trade show displays.
STRAIGHT TIME LABOR
Work performed on straight time, not overtime.
SUBCONTRACTOR
An individual or company retained by a general contractor to provide services.
SUPERVISION
A person in charge of the labor crew who directs the installation and dismantle of a booth.

TABLE SKIRT
A fabric covering which drapes over a table, often paired with a tabletop trade show booth. May have a printed or silk-screened logo. Also called a Table Throw or Table Cover.
TABLE-TOP DISPLAY
Small exhibits which fit on top of a table, usually 6 or 8 feet wide. Popup Trade Show Displays and Folding Displays are types of a tabletop trade show booth.
TAPERED
Diminished or reduced in thickness toward one end.
TARGET DATE
A date set by show management for the arrival of freight at a trade show. Usually, shipments received before or after this date are assessed a penalty charge.
TARIFF RATES
Shipping charges for various types of cargo.
TEARDOWN
The dismantling of an exhibit; also called take-down or dismantle.
TEMPLATE
Are scaled/true to size, Illustrator or Photoshop formatted guides which are used to place graphics before production.
TENSION FABRIC
Tension fabric displays use tension fabric graphics. These graphics use a dye sublimation process and attach to a metal frame with hook and loop, zippers, or a spline insert. Tension fabric graphics have become increasingly popular because they are lightweight, durable, and can be printed in large sections.
TIME AND MATERIALS
A form of billing in which a consumer is charged for labor costs (time) and materials.
TOWERS
A tall trade show exhibit structure, often used to store an exhibitor’s products or other show materials. Also elevates the exhibitor’s logo or display graphics so attendees can see and locate the exhibit booth more easily.
TRACK LIGHTING
Lighting that can be positioned anywhere along a track and aimed to highlight certain aspects of a display.
TRADE FAIR
Broadly used as the international term for an exposition.
TRADE SHOWS
Expositions related to a particular industry or group and open only to the members of that group. Also called a Fair in Europe.
TRADE SHOW BOOTHS
An area made up of one or more standard units of exhibit space. Exhibiting companies erect trade show displays within the booth space.
TRADE SHOW FURNITURE
Chairs, tables and other furniture designed to be compact and pack flat, if possible, for ease of shipping trade show exhibit materials.
TRADE SHOW CHARGING STATION
Counters of all types designed with built-in USB ports for cellphones, tablets, laptops.
TRADE SHOW AND EVENT SUPPLIERS
Trade show and event companies who offer supplies and resources to implement trade shows and events. Examples of these offerings are trade show and event designs, trade show booth displays and rentals, trade show and event accessories, signage and trade show and event logistics.
TRADE SHOW MARKETING
Use of expositions related to a particular industry or group at which customers interact directly with representatives of companies. Also called Event Marketing and involves use of a trade show exhibit.

Goals set by exhibitors to achieve through trade show marketing. Booth design is directly related to a trade show exhibitor’s objective.
TRADE SHOW STANDS
European term for an area made up of one or more standard units of exhibit space. Exhibiting companies erect trade show displays within the trade show stand space.
TRAFFIC FLOW
The movement of visitors through an exposition or trade show exhibit.
TRUSS
Structural element hung above exhibit for the purpose of hanging lighting equipment to illuminate exhibit components.
TRUSS DISPLAYS
A Truss Trade Show Display is constructed from lightweight aluminum and provides a industrial look to an exhibit booth. Often paired with Fabric Display Graphics. A Truss Display can be can also be used to hang lighting or other equipment above a booth.
TURNKEY
A complete product or service that is ready for immediate use.

TURNKEY EXHIBIT
Display in which an exhibitor simply “turns the key” upon arrival at show and opens the booth; installation, dismantle, material handling and other exhibit management services are taken care of.

UNION
An organization of workers formed for mutual benefit and for the purpose of dealing collectively with their employer in wages, hours, working conditions and other employment matters.

VECTORED ART
Art that’s infinitely scalable without degradation of quality. Vectored art is created using shapes and lines, with programs such as Adobe Illustrator. Compare to raster art.
VELCRO
The trade name for a fabric closure with two components: hooks and loops. The two components adhere when pressed together and separate when pulled apart, allowing for repeated use. Often used to attach trade show display graphics to the booth.
VETTING
See qualifying.
VINYL GRAPHICS CUSTOM
Cut letters and logos from thin, plastic materials that adheres to trade show exhibit panels, similar to a sticker.
VISITOR
A European term for a person who attends a trade show or trade fair. Also called Attendee.

VIRTUAL REALITY
Computer-generated simulation of a 3D image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment (Dictionary.com, 2019)
VISQUEEN
A clear plastic sheeting that is placed over exhibit carpeting in order to protect it until the show opens. Visqueen also allows exhibit components to slide on top of it during setup, allowing you to align various exhibit components by pushing them into position.

WALKTHROUGH
A final check of the exhibit by the exhibit house before it is shipped to ensure it meets the requirements of the client. The client can also come in for a walkthrough.
WALLBOARD
A construction product used for panels which are temporary.
WAYBILL
List of enclosed goods and shipping instructions, sent with material in transit.
WAREHOUSING
Storage of exhibit properties when not in use.
WORKSTATION
A small structure within a trade show exhibit, which often features a computer kiosk with multimedia capabilities. Also called Display Kiosks.
WAREHOUSE RECEIPT
Receipt issued by a warehouse for goods received for storage.

ZOO
The booth two hours before the show opens.

10×10 BOOTHS
Trade show exhibits that fit into a 10′ wide by 10′ deep space.
10×20 EXHIBITS
Trade show booths that fit into a 20′ wide by 10′ deep space.
